THE AMERICAN FLAG
The bond which unites one American with another is the flag of the United States. It waves gracefully over 48 states extending across the continent and flies over islands of the Pacific and Atlantic and other possessions. More than one hundred and thirty million people owe it allegiance a vast population composed of nearly every race in the world. All are united by one bond of loyalty and devotion, to the flag which means liberty. It has won triumphantly over eight national conflicts. We should honor our country and be glad to have freedom of speech, of the press and of religion. Whether in peace or in war, this glorious banner of ours so nobly consecrated by millions of lives, sacrificed in its defense, can never fail to inspire in the heart of every American a new allegiance to the high principles for which it stands and a new and abounding faith in the land of the Red, White and Blue. This flag which we honor and under which we serve, is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation.

CREATING ESTATES
“Yesterday life insurance was protection, and its motive fear; today insurance is investment, and its motive the creation of an estate,” says an authority. That indicates the remarkable change that has takenplace in life insurance in late years. It used to be that the great majority of life insurance payments went to beneficiaries of the dead. Now well over half of those payments go to living policyholders. One big reason for this change has been the progressiveness of the industry in framing policies which can meet more and more needs. There are many forms of contracts, and it’s an unusual man who can’t find one which suits him. Protecting dependents is just one of life insurance’s jobs today.

HOW TO LIVE
Of course life is worth living! Picture the beautiful things that can happen to any one: A majestic sunset or moonrise; the stars on a clear night; the sound of rain on a roof; the perfection of a flower; a song, a story, a vibrant human voice; the making or doing of a useful thing; an understanding look in another person’s eyes; the grip of a friendly hand; the sense of a destiny shared with others — the certainty of not being utterly alone, even in the loneliest of worlds. Not to run from life, but to run toward it; not to despise it, but to enrich it, for one’s self and others; not to fear it, but to accept it, with open arms; such is the way of life.

![]() ![]() The late late Will Rogers, who had an astonishing gift for touching on the foibles and weaknesses of us humans, once wrote this: “If a man doesn’t believe in life insurance let him die once without any. That will teach him a lesson.” All of us have observed what happens to the families of men who have tried that. In a tragically large number of cases, the result is want and privation, Widows must work when they should be enjoying a happy old age. Children must go without adequate education. Homes are lost — and long-laid plans for the future are irreparably destroyed. For most of us, life insurance offers the only certain means of leaving an estate. Die without it — and the living we leave behind are the great sufferers. Enroll new members into the R. B. O. By doing so you are helping not only your organization, but, also your country, because all prizes in this campaign will be paid out in Defense Bonds and Stamps.

The first patent on a typewriter was issued to Christopher Latham Sholes on June 23 1868. Then he sold out his rights for $12,000 rather than accept a royalty payment for each machine sold, which would have made him a millionaire. Sholes’ invention of the first practical typewriter is credited with first introducing women into the business world. The first typewriter was a crude and clumsy affair mounted on a sewing machine base or stand and partly operated by foot power. Mark Twain was the first author to use a typewriter and, after trying it at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876, bought one for himself and typed “Life on the Mississippi,” the first manuscript written on a typewriter. The first typewriter for children was made by Allen in 1876, with the familiar building blocks of children forming the keyboard. Typewriters were unheard of in England and when the first ones were shipped across, no one knew how to use one. Therefore it was impossible to hire a typist, so business men advertised for “shorthand writers , who could play the piano.” The first personality test measured by typing was introduced in Germany by Herbert Gerstner in March, 1936. His test linked the habitual mistakes and other peculiarities of typewriting with certain features of character. Fifteen words per minute is great speed among the Chinese typists on their typewriters, which have two keyboards containing 10,000 characters. The Japanese typewriter is a little better with only 2,000 characters! But there is a typewriter concern in the United States making machines that write in 87 languages. |
